Abstract
575,085. Upsetting and stretching machines. ENGINEERING & RESEARCH CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1944, No. 3631. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1943. [Class 83 (iv)] An upsetting-machine comprises a pair of. jaws 2, 4 for holding the work C against movement in its own plane and a pair of jaws 20, 22, means being provided to bring these together to clamp an adjacent area of the work and force it towards that clamped between the jaws 2, 4. The jaw 2 fixed and the jaw 20 movable horizontally, against the action of a spring 26 on a block B, vertically adjustable on a base by means of a wedge 42. The jaw 4 is slidable vertically in a reciprocating head 8, being pressed down by a spring 10 into a position determined by a pin and slot 12. The jaw 22 is pivoted at 25 to the head 8 which it also engages by an adjustable spring 30. When the head moves down the jaws 24 first grip the work and then the jaws 20, 32 and, as the downward movement of the head continues, the jaw 22 rocks on its pivot to move the jaw 20 and the work between them towards the jaws 2, 4. This operation is rapidly repeated as often as required to obtain the required upset. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also metal stretching in a similar manner. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
