Abstract

728,139. Welding by pressure; shearing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SOWTER, A. B. March 13, 1953 [March 26, 1952], No. 7773/52. Class 83 (4). In apparatus for cold pressure welding pairs of wires &c. a pair of holders capable of rectilinear movement each has a set of jaws with a bore for holding a wire and having a tapered external shape co-operating with a similarly shaped aperture in the holder so that movement of the jaws in one sense effects clamping of the wire. In an embodiment of a handoperated tool two levers 3, 4 are pivoted together at 18 and are pivoted at 8 and 17 respectively to a fixed block 1 and to a thrust member 11. The member 11 is pivoted at 10 between two arms 9 projecting from the block 1. A pair of rails 15 secured to the block 1 slidably support a movable block 2 resiliently held against two thrust pads 13 on the member 11 by an arm 19 pivoted also at 10 and acted on by a spring 6. A pair of jaws of the form shown in Fig. 12 are slidably mounted in slots 31, 32 in the blocks 1, 2 and are retained by plates 24. Each jaw member 25 carries a pin 33 engaging in a recess parallel to the sides of the slots 31, 32 and in the base thereof. Jaw release members 35, 37 which gang the jaw members together are provided for the sets of jaws in the blocks 1, 2 respectively. Each member 35, 37 comprises an arm having slots which engage the pins 33 and are spring urged to close the jaws. Pressure applied to the levers 3, 4 against the force of springs 5, 6 rotates the member 11 about its pivot 10 and the thrust pads 13 move the block 2 along the rails 15 towards the block 1. A cutting device 41 provided to trim the ends of the wires before welding comprises a pair of connected side plates 42, 43, Fig. 6, having grooves 55 for the wire ends and spaced by blocks 46, 47, within which slide cutting blades 44, 45 as shown in Fig. 7. A pin on an eccentric 53 operated by a knob 50 through a tommy bar 51, engages in slots 56, 57 in the blades and side plates respectively. With the device 41 in its normal lowered position the knob 50 is turned to raise the device until a spring urged plunger 59 enters a recess 58 in spacing block 46. Continued turning of knob 50 raises the blades relative to the side plates. Wires are fed into the jaws and the latter are brought up to the device 41 by operation of levers 3, 4. With the wire ends in the grooves 55 the knob 50 is turned to lower the cutting blades and trim the wire ends. The plunger 59 is released, the knob turned to lower the device 41 and the handles 3, 4 are brought together to effect welding of the trimmed ends. The tool may be mounted on a support bolted to one of the arms 9 of the block 1. Two bench type tools operated by a single hand-operated lever and having fixed and moving holders for pairs of jaws similar to those referred to above are described, and having an end trimming device. The rods may be operated in an inert atmosphere of e.g. argon. Specification 689,927 is referred to.
