Abstract

648,677. Stuffing-box substitutes, joint making packing. PIONEER OIL SEALING & MOULDINGS CO., Ltd. April 8, 1947, No. 9279. [Classes 122(iii) and 122(v)] In a sealing means for effecting a seal with the periphery of a cylindrical member such as a spindle 18 and of the kind including an annular rubber portion 22 bonded to the interior of a metal cup 21 having a central opening which is larger than and concentric with the opening of the said portion 22, the latter has an axially directed flange at its outer periphery bonded to and extending axially beyond the side wall of the cup 21, the flange, at its extending end, having an integral radially outwardly directed flange 23 of a radial extent equal to the thickness of the lip of the metal cup to provide a compressible washer between the lip and an annular shoulder 25 of a port associated with the cylindrical member to be sealed, the sealing means being held near its periphery and with axial compression.
