Abstract

648,378. Masonry. DLOUHY, J., and SIEBER, E. March 28, 1947, Nos. 8408 and 8409. Convention dates, Jan. 9, 1946, and Oct. 22, 1946. [Class 20(iv)] A cement or fat mortar is laid between bricks of less rigidity than the cement or mortar, preferably of unburnt clay, so that the cement or mortar forms a supporting cellular structure, and the bricks are so laid that joints between them run vertically and in alignment through the masonry. The bricks may be laid with any required face 1, 2 or 4 lowermost or forming the face of the wall, and rows laid side by side may be aligned as shown in plan in Fig. 4, or staggered as in Fig. 5, so that the outer mortar layer 8 with the mortar 9 and 10 between the bricks forms a cellular structure reinforced at the joints 11, 12. The Specification also describes other arrangements of bricks to form walls or pillars. The burned or unburned bricks may be hollow and provided with rounded corners, and unburned material may be laid before it is entirely dry so that it shrinks on drying and does not compress the mortar. The bricks may be surface impregnated so that they do not absorb moisture from the mortar, or the mortar may be treated to make its hardening slower.
