Abstract
647,450. Wrenches. STEVENS, A. H. (Byron Jackson Co.). Sept. 10, 1948, No. 23825. [Class 61(iii)] In a well-pipe tong, the actuating force applied to that end jaw which is attached to the lever at the greater distance from the pipe is transmitted thereto by a member rotatable in the lever and having surfaces thereon engaging surfaces on the jaw whereby the applied force is divided into components which tend to equalize the gripping pressures of the jaws. The force applied to the operating lever 1, Fig. 1, is transmitted to the end jaw 2 through a fixed pivot 4 and is transmitted to the other end jaw 3 through a cylindrical member 20, Fig. 5, rotatable in the lever and having segmental portions 27 outwardly extending beyond the surface of each side of the lever 1 for engagement with grooves 29 on the inner faces of lugs 22 which extend from the jaw 3 to embrace the lever. The operating force is transmitted to the jaw 3 in the direction h through plane engaging surfaces 31, 33, in the slot and on the segmental portion respectively, a part of this force being applied to the jaw 2 in the direction of the reaction g to equalize the gripping pressures. Disengagement of the jaw 3 from the cylindrical member 20 is prevented by a pin 15 which loosely engages a slot 26 in the cylindrical member. To accommodate a wide range of pipe sizes interchangeable jaws 5 of varying lengths may be provided.
