Abstract

196,759. Charlton, J. H. March 1, 1922. Ratchet gearing.-In ratchet screwdrivers or other small tools of the kind comprising a pair of pawls controlled by setting a spring so that either or both of them may be engaged with the ratchet wheel, the pawls are controlled by a segmental spring metal strip movable within a ring fixed to the handle ferrule and adapted to be set in any one of three circumferential positions by means of a projecting pin. The pawls 12, 13 co-acting with the ratchet wheel 7 on the screwdriver or other small tool 6 are provided with pivot pins 12<a>, 13<a> engaging bent over lugs 11<a> on a U-shaped member 11, which is fixed in position by grooves 8<a> in a ring 8 on the end of the handle 10. These grooves also serve as abutments for the pivot pins of the pawls, which are engaged by a spring strip 15 secured to a stud 14 projecting through a three-notched slot 8<b> in the sleeve 8. When the stud is at either end of the slot one pawl is lifted, the tool being then adapted for ratchet action in one or other direction, whilst, with the stud in mid position, both pawls engage the ratchet and the tool may be diiven in both directions.
