647,197. Coated paper. ANDREWS PAPER CO., H. P. April 1, 1947, Nos. 8866, 8867 and 8868. Convention dates, April 18, 1945, Oct. 24, 1945 and Feb. 8, 1946. [Class 96] [Also in Group XX] Paper is provided with a surface coating of discrete sub-microscopic particles of silica. A colloidal water dispersion of silica, such as silica sol prepared by reacting a water soluble silicate with an acid, washing the resulting gel to remove electrolytes, covering the gel with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide to form hydroxyl ions therein, removing the gel from the solution and heating it while avoiding evaporation of water, may be applied to the paper by brush, roller coating or spraying methods, or, preferably, by immersion, and the silica precipitated on the paper by evaporation of the water ; or the coating may be produced by wetting the paper with sodium or other silicate and then reacting with alum. Ordinarily the paper should undergo a preliminary sizing process to inhibit penetration of the silica. An ink, dye, or sensitizing solution may be applied to the silica coating, and the latter has the effect of enhancing the contrast between the colour and the paper base.
