Abstract

943,361. Coating paper. CHAMPION PAPER CO. Ltd. Dec. 5, 1961, No. 43526/61. Heading B2E. The gloss ink hold-out of paper is improved by applying a second coating immediately after a first coating of an aqueous suspension of a mineral pigment and an adhesive and then drying the coatings against a polished metal surface, e.g. a casting drum. A slurry of a mineral pigment and an adhesive (casein appears to be envisaged) with more than 50% solids may be used for both coatings although the second coating may be more dilute than the first. The first coat may be applied by an applicator roll 4 and excess removed by a doctor blade 8 which also smooths the coating and works it into the interstices of the paper. The second coating is taken up at 30 and excess is removed at the nip between a press roll 36 and the polished nonadherent heated surface 38 of a drum or belt. Specification 331,578 is referred to.
