Abstract
In the setting and hardening of mixtures of finely-divided reactive solids and a liquid, e.g. mixtures of finely-divided alkaline earth compounds such as lime, and siliceous or aluminous materials, e.g. silica or an aluminosilicate, and water, the mixture is subjected, in the presence of the vapour phase of the liquid, to the temperature necessary for promoting the reaction, the atmosphere being at first non-evaporative until the mass is at least partly self-sustaining and then evaporative so that the mass is completely integrated and dried. The necessary conditions may be obtained by controlling the pressure and/or temperature to ensure an atmosphere saturated with the vapour during hardening and unsaturated during removal of the liquid. The finely-divided solids may be suspended in the liquid in a solids : liquid ratio of less than 1 : 1 and the mix is placed in a mould which is inserted in an autocalve to which a saturated atmosphere of the vapour of the liquid is supplied. The reaction between the solids commences at the outer surface of the mass and gradually spreads inwards, and when the surface is sufficiently strong, removal of the liquid therefrom can be commenced.ALSO:In the setting and hardening of mixtures of finely-divided reactive solids and a liquid, e.g. mixtures of finely-divided alkaline earth compounds such as lime, and siliceous or aluminous materials, e.g. silica or an aluminosilicate, and water, the mixture is subjected, in the presence of the vapour phase of the liquid, to the temperature necessary for promoting the reaction, the atmosphere being at first non-evaporative until the mass is at least partly self-sustaining and then evaporative so that the mass is completely integrated and dried.
