Abstract
<PICT:1018464/C1/1> Gypsum is calcined by heating pulverulent gypsum in a vessel, wherein further gypsum is continuously introduced into the upper region of the vessel and calcined gypsum is thereupon discharged from the lower region of the vessel by displacement through a rising conduit leading from said lower region. The material in the vessel may be maintained in the fluidized state solely by the water vapour evolved, or by hot gases introduced into the lower region of the vessel. The evolution of water vapour is desirably maintained in the rising conduit, and air may further be introduced into the lower part of the conduit. Fig. 1 shows a suitable apparatus, wherein gypsum is introduced at 21 into vessel 11 fitted with mechanical agitator 13, the material in the vessel reaching up to level 29. The vessel is supported in combustion chamber 17, and a rising conduit 24 is provided with discharge weir 28, at about the same level as 29, to discharge calcined gypsum. In a modification (not shown) the heating is effected by hot gases introduced into the lower part of the vessel by a perforated pipe.
