Abstract

Molten sulphur is pelletized by breaking up a stream of the S into globules on entering a vessel containing a S-immiscible liquid and passing the globules through the liquid from a zone where the temperature is the same as that of the S, through zones of decreasing temperature, to discharge. The liquid is preferably water under pressure. In the Fig. (not shown) molten S at 138.5 DEG C. and 60-80 p.s.i.g. is injected into the top of vessel 16 through rotating perforated plates 31, and the globules descend in countercurrent to the rising water (entering at 40 DEG C.), the upper part of the vessel being heated. Overflow water passes to vessel 29 maintained at 30 p.s.i.g. and 138.5 DEG C. The pellets are removed through rotating valve 25 and screened. The ratio of water to sulphur in the vessel may be 5:1 to 10:1.
