Abstract
<PICT:0810926/III/1> Gas is introduced into a liquid bath or into a mixture of liquid and solid material, e.g. for effecting a chemical reaction, through a porous insufflating device, located in the bottom of the containing vessel, in such manner that the gas stream is directed towards the region of a part of the side wall of the vessel. As shown in Figure 1 the insufflating device may be in the form of a porous block mounted in the lining of container 10 and connected to a source of gas by a pipe 17, the porous block being mounted near the side wall of the container. The block may be circular in horizontal cross-section or, as shown in Figure 3, rectangular with its longitudinal axis perpendicular to a radius passing through the centres of the vessel and the block. A number of porous blocks may be arranged symmetrically around the base of the vessel, each being supplied in turn with gas to improve the agitation of the bath. In a further modification the block may be situated at the centre of the base of the vessel and the vessel is then tilted so that the ascending gas stream is directed towards one portion of the side wall.
