Abstract
Lightweight heat insulating material is made from an aqueous slurry containing reactable calcareous and siliceous materials, reinforcing fibres, an alkali accelerator, and a water soluble dispersing and retarding agent, the slurry being preheated before it is poured into a mould which is heated wherein it pre-sets to a self-supporting mass and thereafter is indurated out of the mould. Slaked lime is the preferred calcareous material whilst diatomaceous earth, marl, clay, moler, puzzuolana, shale, granite sand and pumicite are specified siliceous materials. Specified accelerators are sodium and potassium hydroxides and silicates and ammonium hydroxide, and specified fibres, asbestos and glass. Dispersing agents are liquid derivatives, dextrin, glucose, sugar, alkali metal gallates and sodium and potassium citrates and tartarates. Preferred proportions are 1-10 per cent. of accelerators to the total weight of calcareous and siliceous materials and 1.5 to 5 parts of accelerator to 0.3 to 1.25 parts of dispersing agent. Colouring agents may be added to the mixture. Specifications 654,367 and 657,078 are referred to.
