Abstract

The production of porous or cellular concrete or mortar by aeration is facilitated by the incorporation of an extract of mineral oil refinery sludges with alcohol. This extract contains sulphonated hydrocarbons and a small proportion of unsulphonated hydrocarbons which in the presence of sulphonic acids form colloidal solutions in water, and may be made by agitating refinery sludge for 1/2 -2 hours with 100-300 per cent of hot ethyl alcohol or methylated spirit, removing the solution and evaporating the solvent. A suitable proportion is 0.3-1 lb. to 100 lbs. of Portland cement, and 250-350 lbs. of aggregate and sand. Light fillers such as wood flour may also be added.
