Abstract
645,791. Variable-speed chain gearing. MARKLEW, F. J. W. Oct. 18, 1948, Nos. 26977/48 and 5808/49. [Class 80(ii)] In a derailleur type variable speed chain gearing for cycles an auxiliary free-wheel sprocket wheel 13 is axially slidable by back - pedalling to position the driving chain 14 to engage either of two rear wheel sprockets 1, 2 on resumption of forwardpedalling. The sprocket freewheel boss 21 is mounted on a transverse hollow shaft 12 the axial movement of which is controlled by a movable cylindrical cam 15 secured thereto by a bayonet connection 19, 20, a fixed cylindrical cam 6 secured by projections and notches 8, 9 to a barrel 5 mounted on a bracket 3 depending from the cycle rear axle, and a compression spring 28 acting between a barrel closing end cap 30 and a flange 29 of a rod 22 which by a thrust bearing 23 loads the cam surfaces into engagement. Back-pedalling causes the sprocket wheel 13 to rotate the shaft 12 which is thereupon moved axially by cam surfaces 10, 17 to align the sprocket wheel 13 with the opposite rear wheel sprocket. Further back-pedalling returns the members to their original positions. The spring 28 also has a torsional force to load a chain tensioning jockey wheel or pulley 26 supported in ball bearings 27 by a flexible arm 24 secured to the rod 22. Modifications to the cams provide for three speed ratios, processional or otherwise, and for four speed ratios. The two speed arrangement may operate in conjunction with three rear wheel sprockets by axially adjusting the barrel 5 in its holder 4 to cause selection of the middle and either of the two centre sprockets. The spring 28 may operate only as a compression spring and an external spring is used to load the jockey pulley. The arm 24 may be shaped to form a chain guard.
