Abstract
Phosphatic fertilizers are made by finely grinding phosphate-bearing rocks, especially those containing a high content of iron oxide and/or alumina, mixing the ground rock with natural or artificial sodium sesquicarbonate, with or without additional sodium carbonate, in such proportions that the ratio Na2O:P2O5 in the resulting mixture is between 1.3:1 and 2:1, curing the mixture by maintaining it between 100 DEG and 700 DEG C for not less than 5 hours and firing the cured mixture at 1050 DEG -1200 DEG C in a closed oven. The final product may be ground and bagged. In the firing step the maximum working temperature is preferably maintained for at least 1 hour before the oven is allowed to cool. In one embodiment water is added in the mixing step and the wet mixture of ground rock and alkaline reagent is kneaded to a thick paste or dough which is then formed into briquettes or pats, the latter being either air-dried until hard or stored before curing.
