Abstract

Highly-porous masses of beryllia are obtained by frothing a dispersion of beryllia powder as a pH not higher than 4, drying, and sintering. The beryllia is preferably precalcined at a temperature of about 1400 DEG C. and is ground so that 90 per cent is less than 5 m in size, and is then dispensed in water, the pH being adjusted by dilute hydrochloric acid. After aeration, the froth is dried at about 100 DEG C. and is then sintered for approximately 30 minutes at 1500-2000 DEG C.
