Waterproofing; proofing-compositions.-A process for impregnating leather, &c. or wastes therefrom consists in impregnating the material with a concentrated solution of a condensation product of urea, thio-urea, substituted ureas or other derivatives thereof, or phenolic compounds or derivatives, with formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde or other aldehydic compounds or derivatives, and allowing the solution to dry. When starting from waste materials, the dried product is ground to powder and moulded to the desired form. To prepare the solution, the condensation of urea with formaldehyde is carried out by gentle heating in the presence of water, the paraformaldehyde being mixed with water to form a paste to which finely powdered urea is added; the resultant solution is concentrated at a temperature not exceeding 90‹ C. until a transparent syrup has been produced.
