Abstract

A composition consisting substantially of calcium titanate is produced by firing to vitrification a mixture of commercial grade titanium dioxide and a compound of calcium, e.g., lime or calcium carbonate, which exists as calcium oxide at the temperature of vitrification and is present in an amount sufficient to react stoichiometrically with the titanium dioxide to form calcium titanate, with a slight excess of calcium oxide sufficient to combine with the impurities or most of the impurities in the titanium dioxide. The firing may be performed in the presence of a flux yielding phosphorous pentoxide, such as ammonium diacid phosphate.ALSO:A dielectric composition consisting substantially of calcium titanate is produced by firing to vitrification a mixture of commercial grade titanium dioxide and a compound of calcium, e.g., lime or calcium carbonate, which exists as calcium oxide at the temperature of vitrification and is present in an amount sufficient to react stoichiometrically with the titanium dioxide to form calcium titanate, with a slight excess of calcium oxide sufficient to combine with the impurities or most of the impurities in the titanium dioxide. The firing may be performed in the presence of a flux yielding phosphorus pentoxide, such as ammonium diacid phosphate. The product obtained may be milled wet, dried and comminuted, mixed with water, pressed or moulded into the desired form and fired.
