Abstract

A preparation containing the whole pancreas gland in a dry form is obtained by grinding the fresh or salt-pickled gland with anhydrous salts. According to an example ground pancreas gland, plaster of Paris, well-dried common salt, anhydrous sodium sulphate and ammonium chloride are mixed to form a uniform almost dry mass, which is then dried at low temperature and passed through a disintegrator. Portland cement may be partially substituted for plaster of Paris, anhydrous magnesium sulphate or anhydrous sodium phosphate for the sodium sulphate and ammonium sulphate or nitrate for the chloride. The preparation is stated to have higher proteolytic and diastatic power than an equal weight of dry product obtained by impregnating sawdust with the juice of the pancreas gland.
