Abstract

Porous light-weight plaster blocks, for use in building or as insulating-coverings, blotters, or filters for air and dry gases, are made by adding to the plaster, mixed with an excess of water, a material such as lime to increase the pH value, and retarding setting either by adding a substance such as sodium phosphate, borax, sugar, or a colloid, or by heating the water above 60 DEG C. Sodium phosphate serves also as a hardening-agent but other such agents, e.g., alum or glue may also be added. When thickening p commences, the mixture is poured into moulds and allowed to set, after which it can be cut to shape and, if desired, covered with a protecting-layer of plaster or cement. The lime amounts to 2 per cent., and the sodium phosphate to 0.5-1 per cent. of the weight of the plaster. According to an example, the mixture consists of 10 kg. of plaster, 20 1. of water, 200g. of lime and 75g. of disodium phosphate.
