Abstract

644,721. Spray carburetters. ALLDAY, G. J. June 4, 1948, No 15193. [Class 7 (iii)] The supply of light or heavy fuel from float chambers 27, 26 to a nozzle 21 is controlled by a two-way spring-loaded valve 16 operated by an electro magnet 10 controlled by a switch actuated by a device 12 responsive to engine temperature. The valve 16 has valve faces 28, 29 co-operating with seats 30, 31. The device 12 is situated in the engine cooling system or an exhaust heated vaporizer, and energizes the electromagnet 10 when the engine is cold to move the valve 16 to the left, closing the heavy fuel port 23 and opening the light fuel port 22. In a modification the valve 16 is arranged on actuation to block the ports 20, 23 and connect port 22 to a port connected to the nozzle 21 and to a slow-running jet. The piston-type valve 16 may be replaced by a flat plate valve faced with cork. In Fig. 3 the heavy fuel chamber 26 is permanently in communication with the nozzle 21 and is also connected to a slow running jet 46 when the engine is warm, the valve 36 being actuated when the engine is cold to disconnect the jet 46 from the heavy fuel port 35 and open a port 38 so that a light-fuel combustible mixture formed in a subsidiary Venturi 41 is supplied through port 44 to the jet 46.
