[Class 140] [Also in Group XVI] Embossed wall-paper is produced by leading the paper between a pick-up roll rotating in a cement bath and a second thickness-determining roll arranged at an adjustable distance above the pick-up roll, whereafter the paper with its cement layer is passed beneath an embossing roll. As shown, a cement hardening on exposure to air, e.g. a thermoplastic or a chalk- &c. filled adhesive, contained in a box 4, is applied by a rough rubber or steel roll 2 to the paper 1 to a thickness (e.g. 0.5 to 4 mm.) determined by an adjustable rubber or steel roll 3, the applied layer then being led by an impression cylinder 6 against a brass, zinc, wood, lead or alloy embossing roll 7. Adjustable scraping knives at both ends of both rolls 2, 3 remove excess cement at the paper edges, and to ensure that the coated paper leaves the roll 2 immediately it has passed the working line between the rolls 2, 3 either a guide roll 5 is provided or the roll 3 is arranged nearer the cylinder 6. In a modification the roll 3 and cylinder 6 are combined, the roll 7 being arranged above the roll 3 and the parts 2, 4 being vertically adjustable. A dye may be added to the cement in the container 4, and colours may be sprayed, spread or applied by felt-cloth on to the wet or dry cement layer.
