Abstract

Carbon disulphide is prepared by reacting hydrocarbons, particularly methane, at a temperature between 350 DEG and 700 DEG C. with elemental sulphur in slight excess in the presence of a catalyst consisting of silica gel, fuller's earth, bauxite, activated alumina or clays of the type used to remove colour or gumforming constituents from petroleum oils. The catalysts may be impregnated with a promotor consisting of metal compounds of the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th groups of the Periodic Table; in particular activated alumina impregnated with chromium oxide is mentioned. The hydrocarbon is preferably preheated to reaction temperature and the sulphur to the same or lower temperature; in the latter case the reaction chamber is also heated. The reaction products are cooled sufficiently to liquefy only the unreacted sulphur, which is recycled, and the carbon disulphide is extracted from the gaseous reaction products by known means. Specification 265,994, [Class 1 (ii)], is referred to.
