Abstract

Light diene-containing hydrocarbon oils are selectively hydrogenated by contacting them substantially in the liquid phase and in the presence of hydrogen with a sulphur-containing nickel catalyst which has been prepared by sulphiding a metallic nickel catalyst with one or more sulphur compounds in the substantial absence of dienes, i.e. \sE 1% weight of dienes, based on the weight of the sulphiding medium, are present, at a temperature below 150 DEG C., for example by passing a sulphur-containing hydrocarbon oil over the nickel catalyst; preferably having a boiling range of 0.350 DEG C., and which may be a fraction obtained by straight distillation. The sulphiding may be effected in the liquid phase in the presence of hydrogen. The catalyst may be supported on a non-acid carrier, for example alumina, such as a natural alumina having a silica content of not more than 5% by weight. The contacting is preferably effected at not above 160 DEG C., at 10-60 at abs., a space velocity of 0.5-5 kg. oil/hr/litre catalyst and a gas: oil ratio of 50-300 litres/kg. The oil may trickle over the catalyst in a fixed bed as a film. Specification 657,521 is referred to.
