Abstract

Gaseous and aromatic hydrocarbons are obtained from petroleum hydrocarbons having an average of 4-10 carbon atoms and containing at least 70% of aliphatic hydrocarbons by passing the oil with hydrogen or a gas consisting mainly of hydrogen at a rate of at least 10 gallons of oil per 1,000 cubic feet of hydrogen (at 60 DEG F. and 30 inches of mercury) under a pressure of at least 10 atmospheres through a bed of particulate solids fluidised by the gas and having a temperature of 700 DEG C.-800 DEG C. Optionally the product is further treated preferably in the same reactor at the same pressure and 700 DEG C.-850 DEG C. in fluidised bed of solids and in the presence of a further proportion of hydrogen to dealkylate the alkyl aromatics. The total hydrogen in both stages may amount to 1,000 cubic feet for every 5-10 gallons of oil. Preferably the oil is first desulphurised by hydrogenation over molybdenum sulphide at 250 DEG C.-450 DEG C. and absorbing hydrogen sulphide on alkaline iron oxide. The solid may be coke or siliceous material and water gas may be used as a supply of hydrogen. Specification 830,960 is referred to.
