Abstract

Benzene is recovered from a distillate boiling in the range 60-200 DEG C. obtained as by-product in the production of gaseous olefins by steam-cracking petroleum hydrocarbons by (1) hydrogenating diolefins with 0.2-2 mols. of hydrogen per mol. of oil at room temperature to 250 DEG C. and at least 10 kg./cm.2; (2) hydrocracking the resultant oil at 500-800 DEG C. and at least 10 kg./cm.2 using 2-10 mols. of hydrogen per mol of oil to crack olefins and/or paraffins and dealkylate alkylbenzenes; (3) passing the product over a hydrodesulpuirization catalyst at 100-250 DEG C.; and (4) separating benzene. The first step is effected catalytically; if a sulphur-sensitive catalyst is used, hydrogen from the third step which contains H2S should not be recycled direct. More hydrogen is added before the second step which is non-catalytic using a space velocity of 1-6. The third step is effected at 10-60 kg./cm.2 and is followed by distillation and a clay treatment.
