Abstract
642,411. Automatic voltage control systems. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 17, 1947, No. 15996. Convention date, June 27, 1946. [Class 38 (iv)] A carbon pile voltage regulator for a variablespeed dynamo is associated with a second carbon pile shunting a portion of the dynamo field winding. Normal voltage control, is achieved by connecting in series with the field winding 2 a carbon pile 5 actuated by a voltage coil 9. A coil 29 is connected across the pile 5 so that as the voltage across the pile approaches a maximum, the coil opens contacts 13, 14 and closes contacts 23, 24 connecting across the lower portion of the tapped field winding a second carbon pile 16 and connecting the actuating coil 20 thereof in series with the field winding. Thus as the dynamo speed rises, carbon pile 5 maintains a constant voltage by reducing the field current until at a predetermined minimum, relay 29 switches in carbon pile 16 which maintains .that minimum field current by shunting a portion of the field winding, thus reducing the effective ampereturns of the field and enabling carbon pile 5 to continue to maintain a contact voltage output.
