A hydraulic motor 1 driving generator 2 is controlled by distributer 7 connecting cylinder 4, regulating the inclination of driving-plate 3, either to a source of high pressure 18 or to exhaust 19. When the voltage of the generator exceeds a predetermined value, coil 8 actuates slide-valve 20 so that cylinder 4 is connected to the exhaust. As a result, the driving-plate 3 is returned to its neutral position by spring 5, so reducing the motor power and re-establishing the generator voltage to the desired value. The temperature of battery 24, which is charged by the generator, is measured by probe 10 connected to bellows 9 assisting in the displacement of armature 22. In another arrangement, core 21 is excited by two coils, one responsive to the generator voltage, whilst the other is connected to the battery through a temperatureresponsive switch, Fig. 3 (not shown). Alternatively, a bi-metallic strip is thermally associated with the battery and acts mechanically upon the core of the electromagnet, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a further embodiment, a thermistor is connected in series with the coil 8 and increases the current supplied thereto when the temperature of the battery increases, so reducing the generator voltage. The action is reversed when the temperature of the battery decreases, Fig. 5 (not shown).
