Abstract
641,967. Soldering-irons. WHITEHEAD, F. V. July 21, 1947, No. 19424. [Class 83 (iv)] A gas-heated soldering- iron convertible into a blowpipe comprises a tube 1 with a resilient hand grip 2 and a collar 4 into which screws a Bunsen burner 5 which is surrounded by a heating chamber 7 with holes 10 for ingress of air and holes 11 for egress of products of combustion, and having fixed therein a bit 13 with a conical or tapered end 12 on which the flame from the burner impinges. The burner 5 is preferably made of refractory or vitreous material with gas and air passages therein. The chamber 7 may frictionally grip the collar 4, which is sweated on to the tube, or may be provided with a lip co-operating with a wire helix 6 so that it may be screwed therein, the last convolution of the helix being of smaller diameter so as to engage behind the shoulder of the collar to prevent withdrawal. The hand grip may have a bore of two diameters so as to secure the end of the gas .supply pipe. A fine wire 14 may be housed within the tube and project therefrom at the rear end to prevent kinking of the flexible gas pipe 15, but may be withdrawn and serve as a cleaner for the burner. The member 1 may have a gas tap.
