Abstract

688,601. Coating electric lamp bulbs; burners. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 26, 1951 [June 29, 1950], No. 15146/51. Classes 39(ii) and 75(i) In apparatus for depositing particles of fume upon the inner surface of an electric incandescent lamp bulb or other hollow glassware, a burner 2 arranged to extend into the bulb 1 is provided at its end with an open well 16 for containing a readily vaporizable and combustible fumeproducing liquid, such as ethyl silicate, and at opposite sides of the well the end of the burner is provided with outlets 17-19 for discharging streams of a combustionsupporting gas, e.g. oxygen, upwardly and laterally so that the combustible fumeproducing vapour is drawn upwardly and burns in flames 15 which develop concentrated streams of fume 22 that are directed towards the inner surface of the bulb. The ethyl silicate is fed from a supply pipe 37 at the lower end of the apparatus and passes upwardly through a tube 5 to the central well 16 of the burner. Oxygen supplied from a pipe 38 at the lower end is fed upwardly through a tube 23 which surrounds the tube 5 and leads into a tube 6 providing an outer support for the burner 2. The inverted bulb is mounted upon a flared collar 3 carried on a holder 4 that is rotated during the coating operation by a driving-belt 12 engaging a sleeve 13 at the lower end of the holder. The burner is. arranged to be raised and lowered within the bulb by mounting the lower ends of the associated supporting tubes upon connecting blocks 26, 27 that are coupled together and linked to a cam-operated lever 28 whereby the rate of movement of the burner is controlled in accordance with the bulb area to be covered by the lightdiffusing material at any particular moment. Specifications 653,323 and 653,370 are referred to.
