Abstract
696,846. Electric discharge lamps. SIEMENS ELECTRIC LAMPS & SUPPLIES, Ltd. March 21, 1952 [March 30, 1951], No. 7467/51. Class 39(i) [Also in Group XI] The light source of a high temperature gas or vapour discharge lamp operating at high intrinsic brilliance is closely surrounded by a quartz envelope which acquires a high temperature when the lamp is in operation and which is rendered diffusing by the deposition on its outer surface of fine particles of silica produced by burning a silicate ester to form a smoke, the whole being enclosed in a larger outer vessel which runs at a much lower temperature than the quartz envelope and may be made of glass and either sealed or unsealed. The smoke that is deposited on the quartz envelope may be produced by burning ethyl silicate in oxygen at a burner provided with fine jets through which the silicate is forced, whereupon silicon dioxide is produced in the form of particulate smoke. The envelope may be rotated during the deposition of the coating, or the jets may be rotated around the envelope. The invention is applicable to screens within electric incandescent lamps, (see Group XI).
