Abstract

A white diffusion coating is applied on the internal surface of a transparent glass bulb used for an incandescent lamp, where a mixt. of H2, air, and the vapour of at least one organic cpd. of Si or Ti is burnt in the bulb while the bulb is rotated at constant speed on its longitudinal axis, and heated externally. The particles of the coating are directed with a controlled distribution and thickness onto surface (1) by means of an electric field existing in and around the bulb, the orientation and strength of the field being adjusted to suit the bulb size and shape. The pref. cpds. are SiCl4 and/or TiCl4, forming SiO2 and/or TiO2, and the pref. coating appts. is included in the claims. Electrostatic- and chemical vapour-deposition are combined to provide coating particles below 1 um in size, diffusing the light so the filament cannot be seen, but the coating only absorbs 5-7% of the transmitted light.
