[Class 80(i)] [Also in Groups VIII and XXX] Flexible material for belting is made by forming a laminated assembly consisting of layers of vulcanizable rubber or like composition with intervening synthetic plastic sheet material which is strong, flexible, and uniformly perforated, subjecting the assembly to pressure to force the rubber through the perforations, and vulcanizing. Gutta percha, balata, or synthetic rubber may be used instead of rubber. The sheet material, which may be of a super-polyamide such as nylon, may be perforated by forming small slits and then stretching to open the slits. Alternatively it may be made by extruding parallel threads or strips of the plastic material and pressing them at intervals so as to join them together to form a perforated layer. The laminated assembly may be formed by coating the perforated sheet material with rubber. A number of the coated sheets may be assembled in laminated formation. Belting may be formed by joining strips of the laminated material in stepped laminated form by vulcanizing or belt link fasteners. The laminated material may be in tubular form. Rings cut in different widths from tubes of different diameters may be assembled to form an endless V- belt. Reinforcing fibres, e.g. of glass, may be included in the rubber composition or plastic sheet.
