[Also in Group XXIV] Endless V - belts are made by winding in succession on a mandrel 17, a tension section 19 of one or more layers of rubberized fabric, a neutral axis section 20 of helically-wound, inextensible cord, and a layer of rubber composition 21, the resulting sleeve being placed under compression, e.g. by winding a cloth wrapper thereon under tension, vulcanized, and, after removal of the wrapper, cut along lines 22 to form trapezoidal-section rings 23, which are turned inside-out to form V- belts. The mandrel may have a highly-polished metal or plastic surface. The rubber layer may contain embedded fibres, which may extend transversely of the belt. Cushioning rubber layers may be provided on either side of the neutral axis section. Cogged belts may be made by moulding the outer rubber layer of the sleeve, which will form the inner layer of the belt, in contact with a toothed matrix, e.g. of hard rubber coated with a mould-release material. The toothed matrix is allowed to remain until after the cutting operation. Where several layers of rubberized fabric are employed, successive layers may be wound with decreasing or increasing tension.
