Abstract

852,190. Laminates. DAYCO CORPORATION, [formerly DAYTON RUBBER CO.]. Jan. 17, 1957 [Jan. 23, 1956], No. 1738/57. Class 140. [Also in Group XXIV] A power transmission belt is made by continuously applying and bonding a cover layer of bias-cut cross-woven fabric to at least one surface of a pre-formed belt core of reinforced natural or synthetic elastomeric material whilst said surface is subjected to tensile stress by flexing successive portions of the core in a continuous manner, whereby the threads of the fabric cover layer intersect each other at an obtuse angle presented towards the longitudinal axis of the core when the belt is in its unstressed condition. As shown, the belt core 25 is mounted on two pulleys or sheaves 29, 30, similar to those on which the finished belt will operate, one of the pulleys being driven by means not shown. Fabric 24, cut on the bias, preferably after calendering rubber or a similar elastomer on to it, from feed roll 28a is pressed on to the core by the pulley or wheel 28 which is forced against the pulley 30 e.g. by spring loading. The surfaces at this point are tacky, which result may be obtained by suitable compounding of the elastomer. The cover 24 may be fed slightly faster than the peripheral speed of the core 25. When the core has been covered, it is vulcanized by heat and pressure, e.g. in a press or mould. The core may comprise a layer of textile cords, wire cables or the like embedded in a body of elastomeric material and may have fabric components incorporated in it also. A wide strip of cover fabric may be applied to the outermost surface of the core and wrapped around the other sides.
