Abstract

476,163. Indiarubber. BORST, A. J. May 2, 1936, No. 12481. [Class 70] A resilient product is obtained by mixing short strain - resisting elements with rubber or other resilient vulcanizable material, exerting pressure on the mass to reduce it to a thin sheet and to cause the elements to trend in a general direction and to be distorted or deformed in the plane of the sheet, and building up sheet upon sheet to the thickness desired or into circular form, the - laminations being bonded together by vulcanization. The strain-resisting elements may be textile cords, threads or strips, and the rubber may be crude, reclaimed or synthetic. It is preferred to use the core of old rubber tyres, belts, hose or the like. This material is chopped up, passed through a mill, if desired with addition of rubber, a vulcanizing agent, an accelerator, or a lubricant, until the strands trend in the same direction, and the sheet is then reduced in thickness in a calender so as to flatten the strands. The laminated product may be used for bearings, packings, bumpers, or other purposes. For example, in producing a bearing, the sheet is built up on a mandrel and inserted into a mould 17. The mass is then forced down so that the lower end fills the undercut opening of a ring 16, and vulcanized by steam heating to bond the laminations together and to the supporting ring 16.
