Abstract

641,039. Hydraulic shock absorbers. ARMSTRONG'S PATENTS CO., Ltd., and SMITH, R. May 11, 1948, No. 12872. [Class 108(iii)] In an hydraulic shock absorber of the type in which fluid flow between piston chambers (not shown) takes place through a bore A in the shock absorber casing which houses a spindle 27 slidably carrying a truncated conical valve 26 resiliently held on a seating 25 in the bore, an annular washer 28 on the spindle being resiliently held against the valve, a small permanent passage 26a is formed in the face of the valve to permit small fluid flow without displacement of the valve or washer. As shown, the passage 26a is of V-shaped cross-section and is inclined at 65 degrees to the valve spindle. The passage 26a may alternatively be of rectilinear or part spherical cross-section or may have curved sides of different centres of radii. The remainder of the shock absorber may be as described in Specification 517,109.
