Abstract
Magnesium base alloys consisting of at least 90 per cent magnesium, 4-6 per cent zinc and 0.5-1 per cent zirconium, and with or without up to 5 per cent Cd, up to 0.5 per cent each and in total of rare earth metals, Ag, Th, Cu, Bi, Ba, up to 1 per cent Hg and Pb, up to 0.2 per cent Ca and Be to maximum solubility, are subjected to heating to 260-400 DEG C and subsequently to 100-240 DEG C, the time and temperature being adjusted to produce a .1 per cent proof stress greater than that obtained by heating the alloy to 180 DEG C for 24 hours. A test bar according to D.T.D.59.B. subjected to the treatment will have a .1 per cent proof stress of at least 10 tons per sq. in. at 4 per cent Zn and rising proportionately with increasing Zn to 11 tons per sq. in. at 6 per cent Zn. A preferred treatment is 2 hours at 330 DEG C followed by 24 hours at 180 DEG C. The alloys may be cooled after the first heating and also after the second heating by air or oil or water quenching. Specification 511,137 is referred to.
