Abstract

<PICT:0638627/III/1> <PICT:0638627/III/2> Heating and deaerating apparatus for boiler feedwater comprises a tank 1, Fig. 1, fitted with steam and feedwater inlet pipes 3, 16 respectively, a gas vent pipe 20, and a water outlet 4 leading to the boilers, and located within the tank are the usual trays 2 and, between the latter and the pipe 16, a cylindrical vessel 6 having a large central water distributing opening 7. The water pipe 16 is provided with two parallel rows of closely-spaced jets 17 extending therealong for spraying the water in two sheets upwardly and outwardly in opposite directions against an outer cylindrical and inner pairs of straight baffles 12, 13, 14 mounted on the top of the tank, the baffle 12 projecting into the vessel 6, and the lower end of the vent pipe 20 communicates with a narrow gas-receiving hood 21 so disposed above the spray pipe 16 and parallel thereto that the sheets of water issuing from the pipe will just contact the lower side edges of the hood. The upper wall of the spray pipe 16 may be fitted with a laterally-projecting plate 18 for defining the upper sides of the issuing sheets of water, and the hood 21 with an internal pressure-equalizing baffle plate 23; the opening 7 in the vessel 6 is also provided along its two longer sides with serrated or notched strips 10 for distributing the water throughout the length thereof. The outlet of the vent 20 is restricted by a valve 22, Fig. 3, the stem 26 of which is tapered at its lower end to coact with a like seat in a passage 25 leading from the vent 20 to an atmospheric connection 24 and is secured at its other end to a flexible diaphragm 27 extending across a chamber 28 in the valve body, the diaphragm being subjected on its lower side to the combined actions of a spring 29 and the pressure within the vent 21 and on its upper side to the pressure within the tank 1 proper, these pressures being communicated through pipes 32, 33 respectively.
