Abstract

638,562. Automatic regulators. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 12, 1947, No. 15557. Convention date, July 17, 1946. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXII] In an electromagnetically-operated carbon pile regulator, which may be of the type described in Specification 631,815, downward movement of an armature member when the regulator is energized, is resisted by a spring mechanism (see Group XXXII), which is mounted on the regulator, and is adapted to compensate for the varying force between the electromagnet and its armature due to the varying distance between them. The regulator, Fig. 6, comprises a base-plate 11 having riveted thereto a core 13 of an electromagnetic winding 15 located in a case 14, which is closed by a top plate 16. A carbon pile 27, supported by a hinged armature plate 21 above the top plate is slidably mounted on an insulated rod 26 passing freely through the plate and an armature member 22 and screwed into the core 13. The plate 21 is also pivotally connected at 19 through a stem 7 'to a vertical movable member 3 of the spring mechanism, a rigid horizontal member 1 of which is formed integral with an extension of the top plate 16. The tension of the springs 5 of the mechanism may be adjusted by means of a nut 8. Conductors from the carbon pile and the winding 15 are connected to a terminal block 30 welded in the base-plate 11. In a modification, Fig. 7, the horizontal member 1 of the spring mechanism may be supported on vertical posts 17, 18. The regulator may be assembled in a can-like container 35, the outer edge 36 of the baseplate 11 being rolled over a flange 37 on the container.
