Abstract
638,310. Heating gases and liquids. NATIONAL TANK CO. Aug. 5, 1947, No. 21236. Convention date, April 7, 1941, [Classes 64(i) and 64(iii)] Apparatus for heating gases and liquids comprises a closed tank 1 containing a liquid heat-transfer medium 40, heat-supplying element 18 and a heatabsorbing conductor 27, both disposed in the heating-chamber and submerged in the liquid therein.' A heat-insulating partition 8 is disposed between the heat-supplying element and the heat-absorbing conductor and divides the heating-chamber into upper and lower compartments 9, 10, the heat-supplying element being disposed in the lower compartment and the heatabsorbing conductor being disposed in the upper compartment. The partition 8 is spaced from the ends of the heating-chamber to form connecting passages 11, 12 between the upper and lower compartments. The heat-absorbing conductor comprises an elongated sinuous coil 28 having inlet and outlet connections 29, 30 respectively for the fluid to be heated e.g. water, oil or natural gas. When the fluid to be heated is a high pressure gas, a reducing valve may be provided at 36. The heatsupplying element 18 comprises a fire tube 19, a burner head 26 and a pair of flue gas ducts 21, connected on each side to the fire tube and leading the products of combustion to the stack 23. The heat-transfer medium (e.g. water) circulates with a thermo-syphon action from the lower compartment to the upper compartment through the passage 11 and returns to the lower compartment through the passage 12. Baffles 31 direct the heat transfer medium generally transversely over the tubes of the heat-absorbing conductor.
