Abstract

686,182. Heating liquids and gases. SPANNER, E. F. and SPANNER BOILERS, Ltd. Dec. 15, 1950 [Jan. 9, 1950], No. 515/50. Classes 64 (i) and 64 (iii) A heat exchanger comprises a water containing pressure vessel fitted with parallel tubes arranged in groups, all the tubes being expanded into a pair of spaced tube plates and each group of tubes having an inlet and an outlet header, heat being transferred by way of the water in the pressure vessel from hot fluid flowing through the tubes of one or more of the groups to cold fluid flowing through the tubes of the other or remaining groups. In the form shown the pressure vessel J contains separate groups B, E of tubes, hot liquid or gas being passed through the tube group B, and water to be heated flowing by natural circulation through the tube group E to a hot water storage tank K, having a hot water draw-off pipe K<SP>1</SP>, a make up tank L being provided. A further vessel M is arranged above the level of the vessel J and is connected to the water space of that vessel surrounding the tube groups. Initially, the vessel J is completely filled with water and the level in the vessel M is at X-X. As the water in the vessel J becomes heated steam is formed and depresses the water level therein to the level Y-Y or Z-Z, the level in the tank M rising correspondingly to Y<SP>1</SP>-Y<SP>1</SP> or Z<SP>1</SP>-Z<SP>1</SP>. As the water level falls in the vessel J the tube surface in contact with the water and therefore heat transferred in the water by the tube group B is reduced, but heat is still transferred to the exposed parts of the tube group E by the steam. Air pressure may be applied on the surface of the water in the vessel M thereby raising the temperature at which steam is formed in the vessel J. Specification 569,000 is referred to.
