Abstract

762,548. Heating steam boilers by hot liquids. SPRINGFIELD BOILER CO. Sept. 22, 1954 [April 22, 1954], No. 27432/54 Class 123(2) An indirectly-heated steam generator consists of a number of rows of upright, cylindrical heat-exchangers 14 each having a lower chamber 26 divided by a wall 28 into compartments 30, 32 which are connected externally by single bend U-tubes 34 extending upwardly inside the heat exchanger body. The heat exchanger bodies contain water to the level shown, their top portions being connected by steam outlet pipes 58 and level equalizing pipes 59 to a steam and water drum 12. A heat transfer fluid, for example heavy water, distilled water, mercury or molten sodium circulates at high pressure between a heat source such as a chemical reaction vessel or an internal combustion engine jacket and the heat exchangers through which it flows in parallel, the heat carrier entering each inlet compartment 30 through pipes 16, 20, 22 and discharging from compartments 32 through pipes 24, 27, 18. Water is continuously circulated through the heat exchangers, the water being withdrawn from their upper portions through pipes 36, 40, 42 by a pump 44 which delivers it through pipes 46, 48, 52, 56 to their lower portions. Make-up water is fed to drum 12 througn a valve 64 and a pipe 62, the valve being controlled according to the level in the drum 12, and flows through a downcomer pipe into injectors 54 disposed in pipes 52, the injectors feeding the water into the heat exchangers. In a modification the forced circulation pump 44 is dispensed with, the water circulating by convection through pipes 59, drum 12 and the downcomer pipe which is connected directly to the heat exchanger base.
