Abstract

638,169. Load-handling apparatus; load, engaging. TAYLOR & SONS (MANCHESTER), Ltd., F., and TAYLOR, W. June 4, 1947, No. 14734. [Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv)] An attachment for the end of the jib of a crane for lifting poles and allowing them when lifted to be turned from a horizontal position into a vertical position, comprises a member which carries at its outer end one part of a universal joint, the other part of the joint having secured to it a plate provided with chains, claws or other means for securing a pole. The Figures show the application to a crane as described in Specification 618,793. The attachment consists of a tapered sleeve B which is fitted over the end of the jib after the lifting hook has been removed, and secured by a bar passing through holes in the jib and sleeve. The ball b of a ball-and-socket joint is secured to the sleeve whilst the socket b<SP>1</SP> of the joint has fixed to it a plate C having brackets d at each side carrying pivoted hooks D. A pole is secured in the hooks by a pair of chains E, each chain being secured at one end to the plate C and at the other end being engaged by a screw E<SP>1</SP> which may be rotated by a handle e to tighten the chains. Leather, fabric or like strips F secured to the plate C increase the grip of the chains on the pole.
