Abstract

637,960. Spray burners. HANSEN, K. E. June 8, 1948, No. 15489. Convention date, June 18, 1947. [Class 75 (i)] A "spill " type burner having a vortex chamber 4 with tangential admission channels 9 and a single central unrestricted outlet orifice, is provided with return-oil channels 10 leading to a return pipe and a regulating member 3 which effects simultaneously the stepped opening and closing (and vice versa) respectively of the two sets of channels 9, 10. As shown a burner casing 1 houses a flanged liner 2 which forms, with the walls of the casing 1, an annular oil - supply chamber 8, and has a central bore one end of which forms the vortex chamber 4. The tangential channels 9 and the channels 10 are formed respectively in the bottom and top halves of the liner 2, the upper end of which opens into a return-oil chamber 11 leading to the return pipe. An axially movable piston forming the regulating member 3 slides within the liner bore and serves both to seal the vortex chamber 4 and to regulate the amounts of oil supplied thereto and to the return pipe. The member 3 may be rotatable to effect regulation, in which case it is provided with a helical cut-off surface, or alternatively a tubular slide valve may enclose the vortex chamber which latter must be sealed from the return oil chamber.
