[Classes 64(i) and 64 (iii)] In a heat exchanger in which the two fluids, e.g. air and hot waste gases, are in counterflow at part of the areas of heat exchange, a casing 16, 17 is divided internally into separate fluid-tight compartments for fluid flow by two or more parallel walls 32, 33 which each have a plurality of closely spaced heat-conducting pins 48 on both surfaces at that part where the two fluids are in counterflow, the pins on one wall extending towards but not into contact with those on the opposite wall. In the recuperator shown, alternate spaces between trapezoidal plates are closed at the top and bottom by strips 31, 35 to form passages for air flowing from an inlet 54 to an outlet 55. The hot gases flow upwardly through the intermediate spaces. The pins are located in a rectangular central zone, as shown. Other arrangements of air and gas inlets and outlets are described, in one of which the zone in which the pins are located is semi-annular. The pins may be circular, polygonal, or streamlined in cross-section, and may taper throughout their lengths or only at their ends. Pins on opposite surfaces of a wall may be integral and extend through holes in the wall.
