636,839. Plate heat exchangers. ROVER CO., Ltd., and BELL, F. R. May 13, 1948, No. 13125. [Class 64(iii)] A heat exchanger, e.g., for use as a regenerator for an internal combustion engine, an air cooler, or a cooler or heater for lubricating oil, comprises an assembly of thin sheet metal cells arranged parallel to each other to provide fluid passages which are alternately at right angles to each other, and corrugated metal strips e, f obliquely and similarly disposed in the cells. In the form shown, cells open at the top and bottom and formed by side walls a and end walls b are spaced apart to form intermediate cells which are closed at the top and bottom and open at the ends. The intermediate cells contain two corrugated strips f separated by a plate k, and may also contain, in the regions on opposite sides of the strips f, corrugated strips of larger pitch to stiffen the plates a.
