[Class 75 (iii)] [Also in Group XV] A frictional lighter, wherein the sparking mechanism, mounted at the top of an elongated barrel which may terminate in a pencil or the like, is operated by a vertically reciprocable finger piece, the lower part of which lies alongside the upper part of the barrel, is characterized in that the lower part of a downwardly projecting spring member located between said lower part of the finger piece and said barrel acts as a pocket clip and is engaged with the lower part of the finger piece to guide the latter. The lighter unit, carried by a shell 2 which removably fits in the upper end of an elongated barrel 1, includes a snuffer 9 pivoted on the spindle 6 of the friction wheel 5 and pivotally con nected at its side remote from the wick 8 to the upper end of a finger piece 11 which is slidable along side the tube 1 and is de pressed by means of a boss like lug 29 to raise the snuffer and rotate the friction wheel through paw and ratchet mechanism The finger piece 11 forms part of a pocket clip, being urged towards the tube 1 by a leaf spring 32, one end of which is pivoted to the lower end of the finger piece, the other end being connected to a guide block 33, which projects through a slot 36a in the side of the tube 1 and is slidable in a housing 34 within the shell 2. A restoring spring 35 in the housing 34 urges the block 33 upwards. A tube 19 having a closed top 20 is fixed inside the lower end of the barrel 1, and removably receives a shell 22 which houses spare flints, and also spare leads for a pencil 21 carried at the lower end thereof, a detachable eraser 23 being carried at the other end. The space between the barrel 1 and tube 19, and also the space 16 in the shell 2, are filled with cotton or the like to form fuel chambers, each chamber being closed by a ring 27, 28, respectively, of felt or like absorbent material which transmits the volatile liquid.
