Abstract
607,650. Frictional igniters. FREELAND, D. M. Feb. 9, 1946, No. 4119. [Class 75(iii)] In a lighter having a sliding cover for the wick and ignition mechanism which is displaceable by hand to the open and closed positions, the ignition mechanism is actuated automatically during the opening movement of the cover. The friction wheel 10a, Fig. 5, may be mounted on the top of the lighter and may have ratchet teeth adapted to be engaged by a rack 23 carried internally in a recess 24 of the cover 9a and urged inwardly by springs 26. The wick 3 may be protected in the open position on two sides by the cover 9a and on the third side by a corner block 6, Fig. 2, which may be integral with the reservoir 1 or which may have a projection co-operating with a recess in the reservoir to form a dovetail joint. The upper part of the body of the lighter may have a longitudinal projection 8a, Fig. 5, engaging in a corresponding shaped slot in the cover 9a, see Fig. 2, to guide the sliding movement, and outward movement of the cover may be limited by a spring urged stop engaging in a camshaped depression in the upper inner wall of the cover. The flint 14 and its spring may be housed in a tube extending vertically through the reservoir.
